Wholeheartedly, wish I could tell all my sickle cell warriors that they will only be judged on their work performance, intelligence, dedication and all the normal scales your employer should judge you on. Unfortunately, thats not the case. I was having a private conversation about different level position and one of the first thing asked... What happens when you sick.. So now I'm being judged for having sickle cell.
Yes, first thing that comes to my mind is that its illegal to judge me and not promote because of sickle cell. Lets take a step back here. They can do what they want because at the end of the day employer will put it off on something else.
I guess it really hurt me and pissed me off. The person I was talking to I respect personally and professionally but this person was right to ask those questions but whether I like it or not thats what the bosses will be saying behind closed doors. They will say Faustine is a great person hard worker and an amazing asset for the company but.....
Sickle cell warriors you need to be so good they can't deny you even with the but she or he has sickle cell and will probably be in the hospital. You must have a plan of action that allows you to be present in the work situation while in the hospital.
I know that's not exactly what you wanted me to say sickle cell warriors but this is the truth. My heart hurts saying that. Honestly, I thought I found an employer and more importantly leader in the company that saw me for me. Unfortunately I was wrong in one case. That even though I have shown how much of an asset I am to the company. My sickle cell will be contributing fact in most peoples view of me.
Sickle Cell warriors this post has been sitting in my draft section for almost year. I realized it doesn’t help me or anyone else if we aren’t talking about. We have to have those hard conversations with ourselves and others. Remember the only thing you can control is atmosphere in which you have the hard conversation. That does make a difference on how the other party handles and responds.
